2 Parts To Our Identity In Christ And How To Fight With It

After years of struggling with pain and my identity, it was finally settled. I came out of inner healing in 2012 on solid ground about my identity in Christ.  I no longer doubted that I was a child of God, that He loved me, and that He had a plan – for me.

Part 1 Of Our Identity In Christ

There are many scriptures I fed on BEFORE I went through inner healing. They were weapons against the lies and wounds of my past – I stood on them in spite of how I felt. But AFTER inner healing, I believed and walked in them. I’ll share a few below in personalized form.

I am fearfully and wonderfully made in His image (Psalm 139:14 & Genesis 1:26).

How great is the love that the Father has lavished on me that I should be called a child of God – and that is what I am – a CHILD OF GOD (I John 3:1).

I am His masterpiece created in Christ Jesus to do good works that He prepared beforehand that I should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).

This identity topic has been burning in my heart for years to teach others so that they too would know and walk in their God-given identity.  But little did I know at the time how much deeper God would take me into this journey of unveiling my identity.  The journey continues, but I still feel compelled to share what I’ve learned up until this point.

Part 2 Of Our Identity In Christ

The identity in Christ verses and principles I shared above are absolute truth and true for every son and daughter of God.  But He’s also given a specific identity to each of us – based on His calling on our lives.  And it’s often spoken way before it comes to fruition.

Take for example Gideon.  He had an encounter with an angel of God who called him a mighty warrior.  Gideon felt nothing like a mighty warrior.  He doubted God even cared about him, much less that he was the weakest of the weakest tribe. (see Judges 6:11-16)

But the angel spoke to His heavenly identity – how God saw him – not who he was at the moment.

Both Parts Work Together

And that’s true for you too.

If you’ve received Him into your heart and given Him your life, you’re His child (John 1:12).

You’re fearfully and wonderfully made in His image (Psalm 139:14; Genesis 1:26).

You’re a partaker of His divine nature (II Peter 1:4).

You’re salt and light (Matthew 5:13-14).

This is foundational to our faith. It’s what one minister calls our last name. It’s part of our identity we share with our brothers and sisters.

But He also has a specific, unique identity for you. The same minister calls this our first name. These are specific prophetic promises about His call on your life.

If you haven’t yet received a word – ask Him for one. And be prepared for Him to show you. He may speak directly to you through the Word, in prayer, through a song, a person, etc. The answer may not come immediately, but it will come.  Be patient, and keep asking because those who seek the Lord lack no good thing (Psalm 34:10; Psalm 84:11).

How We Fight With Our Identity In Christ

And it’s with these words that we fight the good fight. Both the verses that speak to our shared identity in Christ with God’s family and the personal, specific words He speaks over us.

As we heal and renew our minds, we’ll eventually no longer need to war with the shared identity verses, but we’ll still need to fight with our specific identity verses as we await their fulfillment.

This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight.  I Timothy 1:18

Here are some ways to fight with your words (prophecies or promises).

  • Form them into an identity statement that you declare every day during your quiet time.
    • Shared identity in Christ example:  I am fearfully and wonderfully made in His image.
    • Personal identity example:  I am a teacher and lover of the Word.
  • Write them on index cards that you keep with you.  Use them every time you feel doubt, you feel weak, or the enemy attacks.
  • Meditate on them during your quiet time and throughout the day (biblical meditation is to ponder, chew on).

So I hope this encourages you to go deeper into the revelation of your identity in Christ AND how to use it to fight the good fight.
